Golf report for week ending 4/8/2020
Sandy Cook was leading the gross and the nett going into the last day of the ladies Championships on Wednesday. Twenty times ladies champion, Liz Hobday, picked up six shots on Sandy on the top nine to put herself back in contention for another win. Sandy then came back on the bottom nine to take out her first ladies’ championships.
Helen Edwards took out the B-grade gross when she sunk a 5 metre putt on the 18th to finish 1 shot ahead of Trudi Tonkin.
Helen’s good form also saw her win the nett trophy 4 shots ahead of Sandy Cook.
Sandy was back in the winner’s circle again on Saturday with 36 points followed Trudi Tonkin with 34 points.
Friday’s stabelford was won by Helen Tickle with 34 points. Next best was Pat Pickering with 32.
Men’s Championships positions after Round 2
For the Gross comps.
Phil Fox has a 5 shot lead over John Coote at the halfway mark in the Club Championships. Phil, with 3 championships will be looking to close the gap on Johns 17 championships.
John Foulcher leads A Reserve by one shot over Gordon Dean.
Tony Schutz has a big lead in B grade. He is 8 shots ahead of Adrian King and another 1 in front of Ted Edmonds and Ross Chilcott
In form, Harry Edmonds is 15 shots ahead of John Stansfield in C grade and Peter Bucknell is 10 in front of Ross Tutt in D grade.
For the Nett comps
Tony Schutz is the overall leader of the nett comp, one shot ahead of Harry Edmonds and Gordon Dean.
A Grade – Phil Fox 5 clear of John Coote
A Reserve – Gordon Dean 3 ahead of John Foulcher
B grade - Tony Schutz leads Adrian King by 4
C Grade - Harry Edmonds ahead of Ken Austin by 6
D grade - Peter Bucknell leads Matt Flitcroft by 7

Thursday’s 12-hole comp was won by John Watts with 25 points. One point behind was Bill Wade and Greg Smith finished 3rd in a countback. Darryl Campbell won the putting yet again.
Saturday’s Sutton Insurance Brokers Monthly Mug was played in conjunction with the first round of the Championships.
Tony Schutz took out the Mug in a countback with Gordon Dean. They each finished with nett 65, two shots in front of 3 other players.
Grade winners were A Grade – Gordon Dean, 65, B Grade – Adrian King, 68, C Grade – Harry Edmonds, 67, and D Grade – Matt Flitcroft, 68.
Ball winners started with Phil and Brian Fox, 67, and went down to nett 69.
Best in on Sunday were John Foulcher, Tony Schutz and Harry Edmonds with nett 67’s. John won the day in a countback. Noel Cross, Ted Edmonds and Adrian King all finished with nett 68 while Gordon Dean, Ken Austin and Steve Kent finished with nett 69.
It is worth noting that Gordon Dean shot 6 under his age on Saturday and 2 under on Sunday. Not many golfers get to do that.
Tuesday’s veterans stableford was won by John Williams with 36 points. Close behind was Barry Young with 35 points. Leon Fox, Gordon Dean and Larry Finney were ball winners with 34 points while Alex Wyper picked up the putting prize with 32 putts.
Notes - the veterans have their AGM next Tuesday August 11 and the Inverell veterans Open Day has been cancelled due to the safety risks involved and the difficulty in complying with restrictions required to keep players safe.
The next weeks program is.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5 the ladies play a stablefords.
The men’s 12-hole comp is on Thursday.
Friday will be a stableford for the ladies.
Saturday will see the 3rd round of the men’s Club Championships played with a ‘Seeded Draw’ and will be a stableford for the women.
Sunday will be the final round of the men’s Championships.
On Tuesday, the veteran men will play their usual stableford with a 9am shotgun start while the ladies’ veterans will play their 9-hole comp.
